As part of the Paglej! film series, which we are preparing in co-production with the Idrija City Library, we will screen three documentaries: two are music-biographical, the first follows the story of American trumpeter Chet Baker, and the second is a kind of biographical drama that follows the career of Slovenian musician Zoran Predin. The third documentary film of this year’s series will present an interesting musical-political and emotional story from the 1960s.
We are starting the series on Thursday, November 6, with the film Let’s Get Lost, which tells the story of the legendary jazz trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker. He began his career in the 1950s and was considered one of the leading representatives of cool jazz, a style characterized by romance and melancholy. The film won the Critics’ Choice Award at the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar in the documentary category.
A week later, on November 13, the Slovenian film Praslovan will be screened. We will follow the career of Zoran Predin, from the singer’s young years in Maribor, the period when he performed at sold-out concerts in numerous Yugoslav cities with the band Lačni Franz, to his solo career, which once again took him to the stages of the former common homeland.
The series will conclude on November 20 with the film Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat. The documentary tells a very intriguing story about how jazz musicians – without realizing it – helped to conceal the political and economic interests of capitalist countries. Using archival footage and the testimonies of musicians and politicians, the film cleverly weaves together jazz, the Cold War and the struggle for decolonization.
All screenings are admission free and will take place on Thursdays at 19:00 at the Filmsko gledališče Idrija.
