It is immediately clear to even the most superficial fan of Slovenian music that the film Praslovan, named after the widely known Lačni Franz’s song of the same name, is about Zoran Predin, the frontman of this cult Maribor band and the author of the song. The filmmakers describe Predin as a “rebel, fighter for rights, post-punker and chansonnier” and add that he was “an unforgettable member of the Yugoslav new wave”. Praslovan is a biographical drama that follows Predin’s career from the beginning to the present day. From the singer’s young years in Maribor, when he performed at sold-out concerts in numerous Yugoslav cities with the band Lačni Franz – as one of the few Slovenian bands that sang in Slovenian – (in Zagreb, the band even had several concerts in a row in the same club), to his solo career, which once again took him to the stages of the former common homeland. In the film, in which interviews with artists and other prominent figures from the former Yugoslavija are interwoven with archival material and re-enactments (young Predin is played by his son Žiga), the role of the “guide”” through the singer’s life is played by actor Nenad Tokalić – Nešo. Not only musicians speak about Predin, but also renowned writers, journalists and music critics, such as Ante Tomić, Miljenko Jergović, Aleksandar Stanković and Petar Janjatović.
