As part of the film series Paglej!, which we are preparing in co-production with the Idrija City Library, we will screen four music documentaries. The set of films will include portraits of three legendary musicians (Cesária Évora, Miles Davis and Leonard Cohen) and a film about a little-known musical scene developed by Turkish workers in Germany.

We will start the series on Wednesday, November 15, with the film Cesária Évora that tells the story of the eponymous Cape Verdean singer, the “barefoot diva” (she performed barefoot), who only after the age of 50, after growing up in poverty and mostly performing in local bars in her hometown of Mindelo, experienced a breakthrough on the global scene. A week later, on Thursday, November 23, we will present Love, Deutschmarks and Death, a film about the music of Turkish workers in the Federal Republic of Germany, who on the basis of traditional Turkish music in the new environment developed new musical directions, which haven’t existed in Turkey before.

Only a week later, on Thursday, November 30, the third film, Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, will be screened. The documentary, which tackles the turning points of Davis’ 60-year career (bebop, cool jazz, jazz fusion…), was created as part of the television series American Masters and premiered at the Sundance festival in 2019, and then won two Emmy awards, for Outstanding Arts and Culture Documentary and Outstanding Sound. This year’s movie series Paglej! will be concluded with the film Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song, which will be shown on Thursday, December 7. Through the prism of perhaps Cohen’s most famous song, the film chronicles both his creative journey and the unusual fate of the song Hallelujah, which was initially rejected by the label, but then became globally recognized.

All screenings are admission free and will take place at the Filmsko gledališče Idrija at 19:00.
