a solo journey through a range of traditional music, supported by improvisation and experimentation
Iztok Koren (five string and three string banjo, guembri, steel drum, morin khuur, percussion, synthesizer, harmona, kalimbas)
The double concert, co-organized by two concert series – Keltika and Defonija – will feature the BHAKTI project by Zoh Amba, one of the most acclaimed young American free-jazz saxophonists, and string player and multi-instrumentalist Iztok Koren, whose solo performance combines improvisation and numerous traditional instruments. Zoh Amba is a saxophonist and composer who combines avant-garde jazz, noise and devotional hymns in her own unique expression. She released two albums in 2022; her debut, O, Sun, was produced by John Zorn and released on his cult label Tzadik. Amba’s second album, Bhakti, gave the name to her ever-changing band. Amba has also performed at prestigious festivals such as Vision Festival, ReWire Festival, and Big Ears Festival. Iztok Koren’s concert will offer an insight into the skillful interweaving of improvised and experimental music, with which Koren tackles a wide range of traditional music, from North American to African to the Far East. After his second solo album Praznina / Emptiness (2023), Koren (known from the bands Širom, ŠKM Banda and Hexenbrutal) released an album in the Prostori / Spaces discography series entitled Spaces XIII: Iztok Koren, String instruments & Percussion.
The Zoh Amba BHAKTI concert is part of the Keltika concert series, and the Iztok Koren concert is part of the Defonija concert series.
