As part of the movie series Paglej!, which we are preparing in co-production with the Idrija City Library, we will present three quite interesting music documentaries. The two will shed light on the creativity of world-famous singers Joan Baez and Aretha Franklin, and a film about the longest-running Slovene punk band Indust-Bag will also be shown.

We start the series of three documentaries on Thursday, November 14, with the film Joan Baez: I’m a Noise. The documentary about the icon of American folk music is described as a mixture of biography and concert film, as it follows the singer on her farewell tour in 2018, while at the same time exploring her private life with the help of a rich archive. Baez is also known for her political engagement; among other things, she marched alongside Martin Luther King in the famous “March on Washington”.

On Wednesday, November 20, 100dB Indust-bag will be shown, a “garage documentary”, as the authors Jaka Terpinc and Gregor Bauman call the film about the band Indust-bag. Although the band started more than 40 years ago during the second wave of Slovenian punk, punk was only a starting point for the band, to which they added other influences from blues to psychedelia and built their own style of alter-rock, which also resonated on the Yugoslav scene.

The series will conclude on Tuesday, November 26, with the film Amazing Grace, featuring footage of Aretha Franklin during a two-day concert album recording at a Los Angeles Baptist Church in 1972. The performance was recorded by Sydney Pollack, but due to an error, the picture and sound were not synchronized. The film was first broadcast only in 2018, after the singer’s death, when the error was corrected by producer Alan Elliott. The album Amazing Grace is considered one of the best-selling gospel albums and won the singer a Grammy for best soul gospel performance.

All screenings are admission free and will take place at the Filmsko gledališče Idrija at 19:00.
