Tania Giannouli (piano)
Andreas Polyzogopoulos (trumpet)
Kyriakos Tapakis (oud)

Classically trained Greek pianist Tania Giannouli and her trio with an unusual set of instruments imaginatively combines the traditions of East and West, modern classical and jazz music, traditional and modern. The trio performed for the first time in 2018 at the Berlin Jazzfest and immediately garnered the enthusiasm of critics. Jazzthetik magazine, for example, cited the concert among the best of 2018. The trio’s debut album In Fading Light (Rattle Records, 2020) received similar enthusiastic responses and comparisons with the sound of the ECM label. The esteemed monthly DownBeat described the trio’s music as “compelling melodies with rolling momentum … like Manfred Eicher’s dream of a Mediterranean holiday”. The trio will perform their Slovenian premiere at the festival.

Tania Giannouli’s genre-defying “open sound language” is often described as lyrical, inspired, complex, eclectic, intoxicating and highly original. She has published four unique recording collaborations, all released on New Zealand’s label Rattle Records. On Forest Stories (2012) she plays with the Portuguese wind player Paulo Chagas, Transcendence (2015) features works composed for her Tania Giannouli Ensemble, Rewa (2018) is an entirely improvised collaboration with the traditional Maori instrumentalist Rob Thorne, and In Fading Light (2020) is the debut album by her new Tania Giannouli Trio with oud player Kyriakos Tapakis and trumpeter Andreas Polyzogopoulos. Kyriakos Tapakis studied oud and has attended master classes with important musicians from Turkey, Palestine, Armenia and Lebanon. He has recorded and performed with many well-known musicians from the Greek scene, such as Sokratis Sinopoulos, Domna Samiou, Ross Daly, Petroloukas Chalkias, Psarantonis and Savvina Yannatou. Trumpet player Αndreas Polyzogopoulos studied at the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam and took lessons from Markus Stockhausen, a. o. He has recorded over 70 albums and played with a wide variety of international musicians, such as Jaques Morelenbaum, Michel Portal, Günter “Baby” Sommer and Dulce Pontes.
