The concert at the music school will feature a solo recital by German-American saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, who is active in both free jazz and contemporary avant-garde classical music. Laubrock moved from Germany to London in 1989 (where she was also a member of the F-IRE Collective) and has made New York her home since 2008. As a composer, she is interested in exploring the boundaries between musical fields, but she particularly enjoys blurring these lines and intertwining elements of jazz, new classical and experimental music in her multi-layered, dense and often evocative compositions. She has received several prestigious awards for her work. Vogelfrei was named one of the 25 best classical compositions of 2018 by the New York Times. Among her awards, she received the BBC Jazz Award for Innovation (2004) and the title of “Rising Star of Soprano Saxophone” in the annual DownBeat Annual Critics Poll (2015), and in 2018 she also won in the tenor saxophone category. Laubrock leads several bands (Anti-House, Sleepthief, Ingrid Laubrock Septet and Ubatuba) and is a member of several Anthony Braxton bands (quartet, nonet and 12+1tet) and the Mary Halvorson Septet, among others.
