The solo recital will be performed by the established Serbian reed player and composer Jasna Jovićević, who is also a researcher of artistic practice. Last year, she published the book Dobro jutro, džezerke (Good Morning, Jazzwomen) about women in jazz, and she also deals with experimental sound production and innovation in jazz practice. The title of the recital refers to the “illusion of freedom in free improvised music”, which the artist believes is “deeply connected with the tendency to explore the unknown, unexplored, and almost mystical realm of musical expression”. The recital is designed as her navigation of the complex interrelationship between limitations and the aspiration for freedom, within which she explores self-liberation in the context of artistic self-examination. Jasna Jovićević premiered this musical experiment at the Serbian Pocket Globe festival last November when she received the Vojin Draškoci award for her work in the field of contemporary jazz and world music. Jovićević graduated in jazz saxophone at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, received a master’s degree in composition in Toronto and a doctorate in Belgrade (the thesis for which served as the basis for the aforementioned book). She leads the bands Jasna Jovicevic Quinary, Jovićević/Miklos/Wojcinski Trio, and the ANJALI Trio (with Elisabeth Harnik and Annette Giesriegl). She has been artist-in-residence in the USA, Canada, Austria, Brazil and Croatia.
