SUMMARY:Jazzohod #5: Samo Kutin
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, May 24\, at 10:00Meeting point: main square in Cerkno \n \n \n \n \n \n Samo Kutin (SI) – hurdy gurdy \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Georg Kronenberg \n \n \n \n \n \n This year’s Jazz Hike – a guided walk that connects music with the cultural and natural heritage of the Cerkno region – leads to the village of Zakriž\, where Samo Kutin will perform on the medieval hurdy-gurdy. Kutin\, best known as a member of the bands Širom and Bakalina Velika\, is a multi-instrumentalist known for his use of unconventional and handmade instruments. He expands the sound of the hurdy-gurdy with resonators that he developed himself\, and often plays in a natural environment\, exploring the possibilities of collaboration with different forms of life. The picturesque village of Zakriž lies above Cerkno on the site of a previous large landslide\, nestled among surrounding hills. Above the village are well-preserved underground Italian military forts\, built before World War II as part of the Alpine Wall defense system. The hike to the destination takes a good hour. The trail mostly follows a dirt road\, with an uphill section at the beginning. We recommend wearing hiking shoes and bringing a flashlight\, as well as food and drinks. After the concert\, we will return to Cerkno on foot. \nIn cooperation with Visit Cerkno. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Georg Kronenberg

SUMMARY:Jazz incubator #4: Balkan Roots
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 22 – Sunday\, May 24Performance: Sunday\, May 24\, at 16:30\, Music SchoolFree admission \n \n \n \n \n \n Balkan Roots (SI\, GR) \nŽiga Ipavec (drums\, percussion)Manos Barkatsas (Cretan lute\, el. guitar) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: promo \n \n \n \n \n \n This year\, for the residency – where young musicians develop a project\, premiere it at the festival\, and later release it as an album – we have selected the Slovenian-Greek duo Balkan Roots. The duo is composed of Slovenian drummer and percussionist Žiga Ipavec and Greek musician Manos Barkatsas\, who plays the traditional Cretan lute and electric guitar. As their name suggests\, they draw on Balkan – especially Cretan – musical traditions\, reimagining them through the lens of free jazz. As they themselves emphasize\, “it is not about recreating Balkan music\, but about transferring its sensibilities into the open\, dynamic structure of free jazz.” A key focus of the project is expanding their sonic language; Barkatsas employs effects on both the guitar and lute\, while Ipavec uses percussion to transition between rhythm\, texture and resonance. The musicians\, who met in Brussels\, use this project to explore a central question: how can tradition be carried forward without becoming fixed or static? \nIn cooperation with the Idrija Music School. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: promo \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n Žiga Ipavec Manos Barkatsas

SUMMARY:Marco Centasso UM/WELT
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, May 24\, at 18:00main stage \n \n Buy tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n Marco Centasso (double bass)\, Sarra Douik (voice\, oud)\, Manuel Caliumi (bass clarinet\, alto saxophone)\, Riccardo Sellan (electronics) \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: promo \n \n \n \n \n \n Um/Welt is a new project by Italian double bassist and composer Marco Centasso\, who was born in 1992 and after graduating in jazz double bass (2020)\, has continued to refine and expand his string playing technique. In 2023\, he was ranked fourth among the best emerging talents by Musica Jazz magazine. In this project\, Centasso draws inspiration from the concept of Umwelt (environment)\, developed by German biologist Jakob von Uexküll: organisms do not simply inhabit the environment\, but actively co-create it through their own experience of the world. The quartet builds its hypnotic music through the interplay of pairs: acoustics and electronics\, composition and improvisation\, the deep sounds of the double bass and bass clarinet\, and the bright textures of voice and oud (Arabic lute). The latter is performed by Tunisian musician Sarra Douik\, who sings in Arabic\, English and invented languages. The lyrics move between imagined and tangible worlds – depicting planet collisions\, desert coming to life\, and lullabies from post-human worlds. The quartet’s floating music draws on contemporary jazz\, electronics\, and fragments of Arab and broader Mediterranean music traditions. Their debut album\, released last year\, earned the Italian double bassist the Nuova Generazione Jazz prize and fully comes alive in concert as an immersive and transformative experience. \nProgram exchange in collaboration with Circolo Controtempo (Jazz & Wine of Peace Festival). \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: promo \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n Spotify Marco Centasso UM/WELT

SUMMARY:Fred Frith & Jaka Berger AUDITORY CONTINUUM
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, May 24\, at 19:30main stage \n \n Buy tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n Fred Frith (el. guitar\, voice)\, Jaka Berger (drums\, preparations) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Lucia Liss\, Aneta Bec \n \n \n \n \n \n The legendary English guitarist and one of Slovenia’s leading experimental drummers will premiere Auditory Continuum\, a new project exploring the subtle interplay between environmental sounds and free improvisation. As they perform\, they will listen carefully to the sounds of the surrounding environment – both natural and urban\, from the rustle of the wind to the pulse of the city – responding to them and transforming them into an ever-evolving soundscape. Fred Frith\, a veteran of improvised and experimental music\, is widely regarded as one of the most original guitarists. He approaches the instrument in unconventional ways\, placing objects on the strings and using microphones and devices to manipulate and reshape the sound. Over a career spanning nearly six decades\, he has tried his hand at almost every genre\, from art-rock (Henry Cow\, Skeleton Crew\, The Residents) to collaborations with avant-garde giants (Zorn’s Naked City)\, as well as new classical (including compositions for Ensemble Modern) and film music (The Tango Lesson). Jaka Berger – Brgs is a drummer\, percussionist\, electronic musician\, composer and improviser active in numerous bands and distinctive collaborations (Fresh Dust Trio\, Darla Smoking\, Clockwork Voltage\, among others). Since 2014\, he has been developing a prepared drum kit – a hybrid musical instrument that merges acoustic and electronic elements – which he also plays in this duo. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Lucia Liss\, Aneta Bec \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n Fred Frith Jaka Berger

DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, May 24\, at 21:00main stage \n \n Buy tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n Christer Bothén (donso n’goni\, bass clarinet\, contra bass clarinet)\, Mats Gustafsson (tenor saxophone\, flutes\, clarinet\, electronics)\, Goran Kajfeš (trumpet\, pocket trumpet\, synth\, electronics)\, Juan Romero (congas\, berimbau\, percussion)\, Johan Berthling (double bass) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Johan Bergmark \n \n \n \n \n \n This new band\, co-founded by Mats Gustafsson and Goran Kajfeš\, brings together Swedish musicians from different generations who share a desire to continue the multicultural musical vision pioneered decades ago by trumpeter Don Cherry – bridging jazz with traditional\, particularly African\, music. A direct link to Cherry’s legacy is 84-year-old Christer Bothén\, his close collaborator in the 1970s. Bothén also plays the Malian zither donso n’goni (hunter’s harp)\, contributing to the band’s multi-genre expression\, which skillfully combines free and spiritual jazz\, traditional music and elements of experimental music. Alongside the n’goni\, the debut album features a range of traditional musical instruments\, such as the Brazilian berimbau\, the North African karignan\, South American percussion\, bells and other metal objects. These sounds merge into a vibrant sonic tapestry with trumpet\, flutes\, clarinet and saxophone\, while double bass and electronics contribute to percussion-propelled steady rhythms. The ensemble’s interplay is exceptionally well balanced\, given that they all played in Gustafsson’s Fire! Orchestra. Kajfeš is also familiar to our audience from the large band Angles\, previously featured at our festival. “A stunning debut is a sonic journey that invites listeners to engage with music as a living\, breathing entity.” (UK Vibe\, 5 stars) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Johan Bergmark \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n Bandcamp
