In addition to composing music for the Monika Roscher Bigband\, the German musician – who studied jazz guitar and composition – also writes contemporary classical music and compositions for theater performances. One of her stage scores was described by Süddeutsche Zeitung as “archaic minimalism between Rammstein and Steve Reich”. As a guitarist\, she has collaborated with artists such as Elliott Sharp\, and as a vocalist\, she has contributed to film music. In 2023\, she received the German Music Critics’ Award for her third big band album\, Witchy Activities And The Maple Death. Big Band Krško has been active for over 40 years. Like their German guest\, the ensemble blends jazz with a range of other genres\, from fusion and Latin to pop. The album Tribute to Depeche Mode (2011) was widely praised and was also presented at the renowned Montreux Jazz Festival. The premiere performance of this project in Cerkno will feature a selection of works from three of Roscher’s albums: in addition to the aforementioned Witchy…\, also Failure in Wonderland (2012) and Of Monsters and Birds (2016). \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Emanuel Klempa\, Matej Grgić \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n Bandcamp Monika Roscher Big Band Krško

Compared to the octet\, the quartet places greater emphasis on precision\, reduction\, and dynamic improvisation. Their sound is influenced\, among other things\, by the renowned French composer Olivier Messiaen\, who was a synesthete (he experienced music in colors). However\, modern classical music is just one element of the quartet’s eclectic style\, which also incorporates nu-jazz\, experimental hip-hop and contemporary electronic music. The quartet’s expression also includes humorous and bizarre elements\, which they describe as “Dada-rap”. As noted by renowned Swiss jazz critic and lecturer Tom Gsteiger\, their music moves “confidently from frenzy to humorous wit.” With their debut album Pickendem (JazzWerkstatt Records\, 2019)\, the quartet received the German Record Critics’ Award. In 2024\, they were further recognized as the first recipients of the Austrian Jazz Award for best live act. Having performed at numerous renowned jazz festivals\, including in London\, Berlin\, Trondheim and Saalfelden\, the quartet now comes to Cerkno with their latest album Bread. \nThe concert is supported by the Austrian Cultural Forum Ljubljana. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Astrid Knie \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n Spotify Synesthetic4 Synesthetic4

SUMMARY:Hypomaniac
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 22\, at 22:30main stage \n \n Buy tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n Camila Nebbia (tenor saxophone)\, Gonçalo Almeida (double bass)\, Sylvain Darrifourcq (drums) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: promo \n \n \n \n \n \n Hypomaniac is a free jazz trio composed of Argentinian saxophonist Camila Nebbia\, Portuguese double bassist Gonçalo Almeida and French drummer Sylvain Darrifourcq. The group first drew attention with their debut album Hypomaniac\, containing a recording of their first ever performance in 2025. Released the same year by the Greek label defkaz records\, the album vividly captures the trio’s sonic poetics – often described as balancing between controlled chaos and a sense of mysticism\, as the band deftly moves from more explosive bursts of noisy free jazz to carefully crafted ambient textures. Hypomaniac consists of four extended improvised pieces\, each titled simply by its duration duration (19:45\, etc.). Nebia subtly weaves together the tradition of free jazz with contemporary approaches. Almeida makes extensive use of distortion and constantly changes volume\, while Darrifourcq provides a deep rhythmic foundation that is both energetic and hypnotic. Despite their distinct individual approaches\, the trio’s interplay sounds organic\, fluid\, and original. Critics have praised their chemistry and ability to function as a single organism – creating a raw\, immersive experience and maintaining a pulse even in the most abstract passages. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: promo \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n Bandcamp Camila Nebbia Gonçalo Almeida Sylvain Darrifourcq

SUMMARY:Kaja Draksler Solo
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 23\, at 17:30music school \n \n Buy tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n Kaja Draksler (piano) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Szymon Gąsiorek \n \n \n \n \n \n Slovenia’s leading jazz pianist has received widespread critical acclaim in recent years for the albums and performances of her international Kaja Draksler Octet\, which had its Slovenian premiere at our festival in 2017. In this ensemble\, she brings together jazz\, improvisation\, contemporary classical music and poetry in a recognizable way. Alongside leading the octet and performing in other formations (Punkt.Vrt.Plastik\, Czajka & Puchacz)\, Draksler is also active as a solo artist. Her debut solo album The Lives of Many Others (Clean Feed\, 2013) was praised in publications such as The New York Times and Downbeat. She later released two more solo albums: the live recordings Soothe My Soul\, Feed My Thought (Idyllic Noise\, 2021) and In Otherness Oneself (Unsounds\, 2022). Draksler\, who was ranked eighth among the “rising star” pianists in the latest Downbeat Critics Poll\, will premiere a new solo program in Cerkno. In this project\, she draws inspiration from early jazz piano styles such as ragtime and stride. Both are rooted in strong\, dance-driven rhythms\, but Draksler places particular emphasis on the specific sound color of pianos and pianists\, extended her approach into the realm of microtonality. \nIn cooperation with the Idrija Music School. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Szymon Gąsiorek \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n Bandcamp Kaja Draksler

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 23\, at 19:30main stage \n \n Buy tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n Gašper Piano (el. guitar\, fx)\, Tomaž Grom (double bass)\, João Valinho (drums)\, José Lencastre (saxophone) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Nuno Martins / Jan / Sploh / Nuno Martins \n \n \n \n \n \n Belgium-based Gašper Piano has established himself as a versatile creative musician working across composition\, improvisation\, sound art\, and the production of music for dance\, theater\, and film. In his work with guitar and electronics\, he draws on a wider range of styles\, which he deconstructs and weaves into abstract sonic structures and electroacoustic environments. Since 2021\, he has regularly organized concerts under the title Adder Klank and subtitled “gatherings of spontaneous sound collisions”. At his premiere performance in Cerkno\, he will present the latest version of this platform\, in which “musicians of different styles\, methodologies\, and generations connect through listening\, responding\, experimentation\, imagination\, and boldness.” For this occasion\, he is joined by Tomaž Grom from Zavod Sploh\, one of Slovenia’s leading figures in the field of improvisation and experimentation. The quartet also features two prominent musicians from the Portuguese improvisation scene: saxophonist José Lencastre and drummer João Valinho who have collaborated in numerous improvisational ensembles. They both see improvisation as a means of liberation and a challenge to standardized ways of thinking\, convinced that such music has transformative and healing powers. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Nuno Martins / Jan / Sploh / Nuno Martins \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n\n\n Bandcamp

SUMMARY:Mary Halvorson CANIS MAJOR
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 23\, at 21:00main stage \n \n Buy tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n Mary Halvorson (el. guitar)\, Dave Adewumi (trumpet)\, Henry Fraser (double bass)\, Tomas Fujiwara (drums) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Ernest Stuart \n \n \n \n \n \n Mary Halvorson (b. 1980) is one of the most respected and innovative American jazz guitarists and composers of her generation. Known for her distinctive expression\, she defies unambiguous genre labels\, skillfully blending traditional and modern jazz with elements of avant-garde\, experimental rock\, folk and new music. Since 2017\, she has topped the Downbeat Critics Poll as Guitarist of the Year for nine consecutive years. In 2019\, she was awarded the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship. She has featured on over 75 albums as band leader\, co-leader or band member. At the Festival\, Halvorson will present a brand-new quartet that debuted in 2025 at the Jazz Gallery\, followed by a concert at the Vision Festival\, where the quartet was the highlight of the fourth night. The band will perform entirely new music written by Halvorson specifically for this lineup. Alongside her longtime collaborator\, drummer Tomas Fujiwara\, the band features double bassist Henry Fraser and trumpeter Dave Adewumi\, with whom she is collaborating for the first time. “Canis Major feels like the start of something very special”\, says Halvorson\, “the music has been growing exponentially each time we play. I’ve really been enjoying the depth\, interplay and intensity that this configuration brings to my music.” \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Ernest Stuart \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n\n\n Mary Halvorson Mary Halvorson

SUMMARY:Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (EXIT) KNARR
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 23\, at 22:30main stage \n \n Buy tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n Amalie Dahl (alto and baritone saxophone)\, Karl Hjalmar Nyberg (tenor and soprano saxophone\, electronics)\, Marta Warelis (piano\, electronics)\, Karl Bjorå (el. guitar)\, Olaf Olsen (drums)\, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (double bass) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Malwina Witkowska \n \n \n \n \n \n The Norwegian double bassist is known for his work with a wide range of bands\, including Atomic\, The Thing\, Free Fall or Young Mothers. Since 2020\, he has led the collective (Exit) Knarr – named after a Viking ship designed for long voyages – which brings together dynamic music that moves fluidly beyond strict genre boundaries\, seamlessly combining elements of Norwegian folk music\, avant-garde jazz\, psychedelic rock and the rhythms of traditional music. (Exit) Knarr is not a “traditional” band but rather an open collective\, with musicians from different countries joining and evolving the lineup over time. It functions as a creative space for collaboration\, where musicians connect\, exchange ideas and encourage each other to create something unique through collective music making. The band has recorded three critically aclaimed albums\, with particular praise going to their second album\, Breezy (2024)\, dedicated to the late American trumpeter Jaimie Branch. On their most recent album\, Drops (2025)\, Håker Flaten – drawing inspiration from Anthony Braxton’s compositional approach – ushers the band into a new era by incorporating graphic scores into his compositions. For this performance\, the band will present newly arranged pieces from all three albums\, along with material from their debut (Exit) Knarr. These arrangements were developed during last year’s tour and recorded live in Oslo; the recordings are set for release this June on the album Fly. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Malwina Witkowska \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n Bandcamp Ingebrigt Håker Flaten Ingebrigt Håker Flaten

SUMMARY:Marco Centasso UM/WELT
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, May 24\, at 18:00main stage \n \n Buy tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n Marco Centasso (double bass)\, Sarra Douik (voice\, oud)\, Manuel Caliumi (bass clarinet\, alto saxophone)\, Riccardo Sellan (electronics) \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: promo \n \n \n \n \n \n Um/Welt is a new project by Italian double bassist and composer Marco Centasso\, who was born in 1992 and after graduating in jazz double bass (2020)\, has continued to refine and expand his string playing technique. In 2023\, he was ranked fourth among the best emerging talents by Musica Jazz magazine. In this project\, Centasso draws inspiration from the concept of Umwelt (environment)\, developed by German biologist Jakob von Uexküll: organisms do not simply inhabit the environment\, but actively co-create it through their own experience of the world. The quartet builds its hypnotic music through the interplay of pairs: acoustics and electronics\, composition and improvisation\, the deep sounds of the double bass and bass clarinet\, and the bright textures of voice and oud (Arabic lute). The latter is performed by Tunisian musician Sarra Douik\, who sings in Arabic\, English and invented languages. The lyrics move between imagined and tangible worlds – depicting planet collisions\, desert coming to life\, and lullabies from post-human worlds. The quartet’s floating music draws on contemporary jazz\, electronics\, and fragments of Arab and broader Mediterranean music traditions. Their debut album\, released last year\, earned the Italian double bassist the Nuova Generazione Jazz prize and fully comes alive in concert as an immersive and transformative experience. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: promo \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n Spotify Marco Centasso UM/WELT

SUMMARY:Fred Frith & Jaka Berger AUDITORY CONTINUUM
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, May 24\, at 19:30main stage \n \n Buy tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n Fred Frith (el. guitar\, voice)\, Jaka Berger (drums\, preparations) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Lucia Liss\, Aneta Bec \n \n \n \n \n \n The legendary English guitarist and one of Slovenia’s leading experimental drummers will premiere Auditory Continuum\, a new project exploring the subtle interplay between environmental sounds and free improvisation. As they perform\, they will listen carefully to the sounds of the surrounding environment – both natural and urban\, from the rustle of the wind to the pulse of the city – responding to them and transforming them into an ever-evolving soundscape. Fred Frith\, a veteran of improvised and experimental music\, is widely regarded as one of the most original guitarists. He approaches the instrument in unconventional ways\, placing objects on the strings and using microphones and devices to manipulate and reshape the sound. Over a career spanning nearly six decades\, he has tried his hand at almost every genre\, from art-rock (Henry Cow\, Skeleton Crew\, The Residents) to collaborations with avant-garde giants (Zorn’s Naked City)\, as well as new classical (including compositions for Ensemble Modern) and film music (The Tango Lesson). Jaka Berger – Brgs is a drummer\, percussionist\, electronic musician\, composer and improviser active in numerous bands and distinctive collaborations (Fresh Dust Trio\, Darla Smoking\, Clockwork Voltage\, among others). Since 2014\, he has been developing a prepared drum kit – a hybrid musical instrument that merges acoustic and electronic elements – which he also plays in this duo. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Lucia Liss\, Aneta Bec \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n Fred Frith Jaka Berger

A direct link to Cherry’s legacy is 84-year-old Christer Bothén\, his close collaborator in the 1970s. Bothén also plays the Malian zither donso n’goni (hunter’s harp)\, contributing to the band’s multi-genre expression\, which skillfully combines free and spiritual jazz\, traditional music and elements of experimental music. Alongside the n’goni\, the debut album features a range of traditional musical instruments\, such as the Brazilian berimbau\, the North African karignan\, South American percussion\, bells and other metal objects. These sounds merge into a vibrant sonic tapestry with trumpet\, flutes\, clarinet and saxophone\, while double bass and electronics contribute to percussion-propelled steady rhythms. The ensemble’s interplay is exceptionally well balanced\, given that they all played in Gustafsson’s Fire! Orchestra. Kajfeš is also familiar to our audience from the large band Angles\, previously featured at our festival. “A stunning debut is a sonic journey that invites listeners to engage with music as a living\, breathing entity.” (UK Vibe\, 5 stars) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Johan Bergmark \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n Bandcamp
