The Bologna based quintet is comprised of musicians of different generations and experiences, who create lush and multi-layered music, in which they intricately intertwine fiery improvisations and suggestive melodies with references to American “Great Black Music”, South African jazz and European free music. The composer of all the compositions is the pianist Nicola Guazzaloca who publishes albums with renown labels such as Leo Records, Rai Radio3, FMR and Klopotec. The quintet’s third album, Anasyrma (Aut Records / Fonterossa, 2020), was ranked among last year’s best jazz releases by Il Giornale della Musica, the monthly Musica Jazz and Bandcamp. “A quintet that manages to combine melodiousness, immediacy, energy and expressive freedom.” (Battiti radio show, Rai Radio 3)

The pianist Nicola Guazzaloca, author of the music for the Tell No Lies quintet, combines diverse influences in his compositions and strives to cross the orthodox boundaries of individual musical expressions. He has performed in many European countries (Germany, England, Russia, Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, France…). Many albums, released either by himself or him being a member of bands, have been placed on the charts of the best jazz releases. His solo album Tecniche Arcaiche (with a recording of his performance at the prestigious Bologna Angelica festival) was ranked among the best Italian albums of 2015 by the monthly Musica Jazz. The album A Pearl In Dirty Hands with the mostly Portuguese quartet PUI4 was chosen among the fundamental Portuguese avant-garde albums by Jazz Portugal portal. The Anasyrma album of the Tell No Lies quintet received similar accolades. For JazzWord, the critic Ken Waxman wrote, “With these musicians varied talents very much in evidence, Anasyrma is a disc that can be appreciated by many,” while on All About Jazz portal Angelo Leonardi placed them side by side to the greats of African-American jazz: “Stylistically speaking, they are placed between the advanced hard-bop of the Charles Mingus quintet with Don Pullen and George Adams and the historical free with its Chicago developments.”
