Following on from last year’s round table, we will continue to address issues related to the digitalization of music. As moderator Luka Hreščak points out, one of these concerns is that in the quest to make Slovenian music as accessible as possible on digital platforms, we too often fail to recognize the fact that this brings with it a different kind of listening: one characteristic of online platforms such as Spotify or Apple Music. Participants of the debate will discuss current modes of listening and the multiple consequences of the ever-changing promotional tools and techniques in the digital world. For example, Spotify recently announced that it will change its image and the way the application functions in order to bring it in line with trendy networks such as TikTok and Instagram, which are characterized by a very fast exchange of information, a short user attention span and an orientation towards entertainment. Are there any alternatives at all to today’s dominant means of making music available to the listener?
The round table is part of the project Digital Train for Slovenian Music. It is a project of the consortium formed by SIGIC, Zavod Sploh, and Zavod Jazz Cerkno, co-financed by the Ministry of Public Administration within the framework of the public tender for Digital Transformation of Non-Governmental and Voluntary Organizations and Increasing the Involvement of Their Users in the Information Society 2021-2023. The purpose of the project is to make both current and older Slovenian music more present and more widely listened to on digital music platforms.
