More Low Than Low Quintet
julij 15 21:00
thursday, july 15, at 9 pm
Matjaž Bajc, Žiga Golob, Giovanni Maier (double bass), Mimo Cogliandro, Marco Colonna (bass clarinet)
The new collaboration of Slovenian and Italian musicians brings quite an unusual formation of three double bass players and two bass clarinettists, which was put together by Matjaž Bajc. The basis for this quintet was a trio comprised of Giovanni Maier, Žiga Golob and Matjaž Bajc. The latter is also known from the jazzcore band Koromač, while the other double bass players are Žiga Golob, a long-time collaborator of Tamara Obrovac, and Giovanni Maier, who has been collaborating with Zlatko Kaučič for many years. Both Italian clarinettists are also known for their collaborations with Slovenian musicians. Cogliandro plays in Kača, Sraka in Lev Quintet, and Colonna is active in bands with Kaučič. The quintet will hold its premiere at our festival and will “explore the mutual communication of low voices and also hit some higher registers, too.”
Matjaž Bajc, the initiator of this unusual collaboration among Slovenian and Italian jazz musicians, is best known as a member of the band Koromač, which celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2019 by performing in an extended ensemble at our festival, later released on the album Kontrapunk. He is active in various jazz and ethno ensembles (Brencl Banda, Kombo B, Acamar …) and in various ad hoc formations, exploring the sound possibilities of electric bass and double bass within the field of jazz and improvisation. Žiga Golob has been active on the Slovenian scene for several decades, not only in jazz, but also in ethno, rock, singer-songwriter, cabaret and other formations. He is a. o. a long-term collaborator of the esteemed Croatian singer Tamara Obrovac, and for many years he played in Mali bogovi band by Vlado Kreslin. Giovanni Maier graduated from the Giuseppe Tartini Conservatory at the Academy in Trieste and later attended jazz seminars with Roscoe Mitchell and Muhal Richards Abrams a. o. He has played with world-renowned names such as Enrico Rava, Cecil Taylor, Han Bennink, Tristan Honsinger, Richard Galliano and Herb Robertson. He has been collaborating with Zlatko Kaučič for many years. He is the founder and artistic director of Palomar Records label. Both Italian bass clarinettists are also known for their collaborations with our musicians. Cogliandro plays in the Slovenian-Italian bands Kača, Sraka and Lev Quintet, Alchemical Playgrounds and Orkester bez meja. Colonna, who regularly plays with Zlatko Kaučič, has dedicated himself specifically to the bass clarinet and exploring its sound boundaries. Following the footsteps of the legendary blind reed player Rahsaan Roland Kirk, he plays two or three instruments simultaneously, thus also passing on Kirk’s legacy in his Rashaan Trio.
