The legendary English guitarist and one of Slovenia’s leading experimental drummers will premiere Auditory Continuum, a new project exploring the subtle interplay between environmental sounds and free improvisation. As they perform, they will listen carefully to the sounds of the surrounding environment – both natural and urban, from the rustle of the wind to the pulse of the city – responding to them and transforming them into an ever-evolving soundscape. Fred Frith, a veteran of improvised and experimental music, is widely regarded as one of the most original guitarists. He approaches the instrument in unconventional ways, placing objects on the strings and using microphones and devices to manipulate and reshape the sound. Over a career spanning nearly six decades, he has tried his hand at almost every genre, from art-rock (Henry Cow, Skeleton Crew, The Residents) to collaborations with avant-garde giants (Zorn’s Naked City), as well as new classical (including compositions for Ensemble Modern) and film music (The Tango Lesson). Jaka Berger – Brgs is a drummer, percussionist, electronic musician, composer and improviser active in numerous bands and distinctive collaborations (Fresh Dust Trio, Darla Smoking, Clockwork Voltage, among others). Since 2014, he has been developing a prepared drum kit – a hybrid musical instrument that merges acoustic and electronic elements – which he also plays in this duo.
