The documentary Ennio is a tribute to the famous Italian composer of film music Ennio Morricone (1928-2020), who is probably best known for his music for Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns (among others for the so-called Dollar Trilogy and certainly the most famous film of them The Good, The Bad and the Ugly), as well as for films of other genres by respected directors such as Brian De Palma, Bernardo Bertolucci, Terrence Malick, Gillo Pontecorvo or Quentin Tarantino. However, the films of these directors are only a small part of his oeuvre, as he wrote music for more than 500 movies, while he also composed more than 100 pieces of classical music and worked for radio, television and pop artists. The documentary film Ennio is the work of director Giuseppe Tornatore, who collaborated with the maestro on his film Cinema Paradiso (1988) and then on twelve more of his films. In addition to a lengthy interview with Morricone, the documentary includes interviews with many directors, actors, musicians and film composers. All of this is enriched with excerpts from films, recordings of Morricone’s concerts and images of places that shaped the composer’s life. As the director says, with such a sequence of diverse shots, he wanted to “lead the viewer into the formidable existential and artistic parable of one of the most loved musicians of the twentieth century.”
The movie series is prepared in co-production with Idrija City Library.
