The newer band The Chicago Plan is comprised of musicians who otherwise have been playing together for many years now in different formations. The quartet is co-led by reed player Gebhard Ullmann and trombonist Steve Swell, who play together for 15 years in various formations. Swell and Ullmann have been leading The Ullmann / Swell Quartet for more than ten years, featuring bassist Hill Greene and legendary drummer Barry Altschul. This story continues now with a new version of the quartet featuring renowned Chicagoans, Michael Zerang, drums, percussion and Fred Lonberg-Holm, cello. We know them both from Peter Brötzmann's Chicago Tentet. The Quartet tries to capture the sound and musical ideas of three places from which members come, Berlin, New York, and Chicago, and create a strong mix of jazz, improvised and new creative, also abstract music. In 2016, the quartet released their debut Ullmann / Swell's The Chicago Plan (Clean Feed), which has won excellent reviews.
