In our movie series Paglej!, dedicated to films about music and musicians, we will be screening a feature film for the first time, the Green Book, which won three Oscars this year: for Best Picture, Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali) and Best Original Screenplay. The Green Book, inspired by the true story, takes us back to 1962, when the cruel laws of racial segregation were still in force in the United States. The film follows African-American classical and jazz pianist Don Shirley, who hires Italian-American chauffeur and bodyguard Frank Vallelonga, better known as Tony Lip, a former bouncer, for a tour of the Deep South. On their travel, they carry the Green Book, a guidebook for African-American travelers to find motels, restaurants, and filling stations that would serve them. An intellectual musician with as many as three PhDs and an unsophisticated driver, who befriend each other, must face the racist outbursts of locals on the journey. Green Book has received praise and awards; in addition to the aforementioned Oscars (Viggo Mortensen was also nominated for Best Actor), the film, its creators and actors received many other accolades. The American Film Institute ranked the film among the top ten films of the year, with Mahershala Ali receiving the BAFTA and Critics' Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actor. The film also received three Golden Globes in the same categories as the Oscars.

The movie series is prepared in co-production with Idrija City Library.
